Award-winning Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has voiced her growing concern over the harsh realities many Nigerians face daily, saying what worries her most is not economic indicators, but the visible suffering of ordinary people.
In a recent interview, Adichie said life has become incredibly difficult, even for those who were once considered middle class.
> “People who used to get by are now begging. That worries me greatly.”
She pointed to rising food prices and the soaring cost of living as factors driving many Nigerians into desperation.
“I don’t care about the stock market. What I care about is how someone earning minimum wage is surviving in this economy.”
Adichie stressed that the true test of leadership lies in the daily experiences of ordinary citizens, not in statistics or market trends.
She also warned that continuous hardship could push people into making dangerous or unthinkable choices:
“When life becomes too hard, even those who once had principles may cross lines they never imagined. And that’s dangerous for society.”
