Tragedy struck Northeast Philadelphia on Friday, January 31, 2025, when a private Learjet 55 crashed near Roosevelt Mall, claiming the lives of all six people on board.
The medical transportation jet, which was carrying two passengers – a mother and daughter – and four crew members, was en route to Springfield-Branson National Airport in Missouri, with a final destination in Mexico.
The young child on board was being treated for an illness at Shriners Children’s Hospital in Northeast Philadelphia.
Eyewitnesses reported hearing a loud explosion as the plane crashed to the ground, just one minute after takeoff.
Multiple people on the ground were injured, with some transported to local hospitals for treatment.
A shelter has been set up at Samuel Fels High School, operated by the Office of Emergency Management and the American Red Cross, to provide assistance to those displaced by the tragedy.
Mayor Cherelle L. Parker and Governor Josh Shapiro have issued statements offering support and resources to those affected by the crash. An investigation into the cause of the tragedy is currently underway.
