Anambra Native Doctor Akwa Okuko Sentence to 20 Years in Prison

Anambra Native Doctor Akwa Okuko: Arrested Over Alleged Money Rituals and Criminal Ties

Popular Anambra native doctor, Chidozie Nwangwu, also known as Akwa Okuko, has been arrested by Anambra State security outfit, Agunechemba, over allegations of promoting money rituals and suspected links to criminal activities. His arrest has sparked widespread reactions, with some calling it a crackdown on illicit spiritual practices, while others view it as an infringement on religious freedom.

Why Was Akwa Okuko Arrested?

According to reports, Akwa Okuko was detained over claims that he promoted a ritual called “Oke Ite,” which allegedly grants individuals limitless wealth. His arrest follows the Anambra State government’s recent efforts to curb money rituals and other illicit spiritual practices believed to fuel crime in the region.

The crackdown, led by Governor Chukwuma Soludo, was launched in December 2024, targeting native doctors suspected of aiding criminals. Authorities believe that some spiritualists provide supernatural protection for criminals or encourage illegal activities under the guise of traditional practices.

Akwa Okuko Denies Allegations

During an interrogation with Anambra State Deputy Governor Onyeka Ibezim, Akwa Okuko denied any ongoing involvement in money rituals. He claimed that he had stopped such practices due to the government’s increasing crackdown on spiritual activities perceived as unlawful.

Legal Experts Condemn Arrest

Human rights lawyers, including Sir Ifeanyi Ejiofor, have strongly criticized the detention of Akwa Okuko. They argue that his arrest violates his constitutional rights to freedom of worship and expression. Ejiofor stated that Akwa Okuko is a well-known traditional healer who discourages criminal activities rather than promoting them.

Is Akwa Okuko Facing a 20-Year Prison Sentence?

Despite rumors circulating online, there are no official charges filed against Akwa Okuko at this time. Reports claiming that he faces six criminal charges and a potential 20-year prison sentence remain unverified by government sources.

Conclusion

The arrest of Akwa Okuko has ignited debates on traditional spiritual practices, crime, and human rights in Nigeria. While the Anambra State government continues its crackdown on suspected ritualists, legal experts insist that every accused person deserves a fair trial and due process.
